1947 to 2022
Carole Romberg Obituary Carole Jo Romberg, 75, left us all too soon on Sept. 2, 2022, in Fairbanks, Alaska. She was born on March 7, 1947, in Spokane, Washington and attended Mills College for Women in Oakland, California, where she competed with the women's crew team. During the summer of her sophomore year she volunteered in Fairbanks, Alaska, performing high altitude physiology studies on mountain climbers at Denali. That experience inspired her choice to make Fairbanks her forever home. Carole worked a season on the North Slope and was the first female heavy equipment operator for the Alaska Teamsters Union. She worked as a reporter for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, earning a BA in journalism while working part-time at Nordstrom. She then went to work at KUAC, the local public radio and television station. In 1991, Carole joined Taiga Ventures, a remote logistics company, and instantly became family to the crew and company. Her generosity was unbound and felt most when she'd bring in weekly McMuffins, cookies or doughnuts. Carole's black lab, Taiga, came to work with her every day and cleaned up the leftovers, unbeknownst to her of course. After 28 years of devotion, Carole retired in 2019 as the Taiga Administrative Director/PacWest Drilling Supply Manager. Carole was beloved by all of her customers as well who continue to ask about her to this day. After retirement Carole traveled to the California desert, western Europe and family reunions in Spokane. She was a tireless athlete; passionate about biking, swimming and cross country skiing; and a devoted student advocate of the Feldenkrais method of neuromuscular repatterning. Her love of baking earned her the nickname "the Brownie Grandma" from Fairbanksans of all ages with whom she shared her treats. Her artistic side explored book arts with wonderful friends. Carole had many enduring close friendships. Her kindness, warmth and grace made her many friends wherever she went. Preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Jean Romberg. She is survived by her family in Spokane, Washington: her brother, Charlie (Karen) Romberg, nieces Katie (Brian) Trexell, Tricia (Erik) Soreng and nephew Joseph (Monica) Romberg and four grandnephews and nieces, Jack Lewis, Ellie Lewis, Andrew Romberg and Evelynn Soreng. Condolences may be sent to Charlie and Karen Romberg, 1811 E. Rockwood Blvd., Spokane, WA 99203. In lieu of flowers, contributions on her behalf to Hospice of the Tanana Valley, Fairbanks are appreciated. A private interment will be held in Spokane, Washington, at a later date. A celebration of Carole's life will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at the Birch Hill Ski area facility, 101 Wilderness Drive. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
